What does BER mean: It is an abbreviation of “Building Energy Rating”. A BER is completed when the energy performance and carbon dioxide emission rate of a building are determined.
Why do you need a BER Certificate: Under current Legislation (The Buildings Controls Act 2007), all new homes, where Planning Permission was applied for on or after January 1st 2007, are required to have a BER Certificate. Under the same Legislation all homes (new and existing) for sale or rent from January 1st 2009 onwards are also required to have a BER Certificate.
A BER Certificate can only be issued after an assessment has been carried out by a qualified BER Assessor who is registered with Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI).
